Troubleshooting Migration compatibility error: VMotion from source host to destination host is unsupported because of VMotion protocol differences
Symptoms
-
When performing a VMotion migration the following compatibility error is displayed:
Unable to migrate from <source server> to <destination server>: VMotion from source host to destination host is unsupported because of VMotion protocol differences .
Resolution
Overview
This error is displayed when you attempt to VMotion a virtual machine from an ESX Server 3.x server to an ESX Server 2.x Server.
VMotion is only supported between ESX Servers running the same major version of ESX Server, unless you are performing an upgrade using VMotion with Disk Migration. VMotion with Disk Migration allows VMotion to migrate one way, from ESX Server 2.x to ESX Server 3.x.
Note: Vmware recommends using VMware Converter to migrate a virtual machine from ESX Server 3.x to ESX Server to 2.x. The use of VMware Converter is recommended because of the changes in the virtual machine hardware used between the major versions of ESX Server.
