Troubleshooting Migration compatibility error: The VMotion interface is not configured (or is misconfigured) on the destination host
Symptoms
-
When performing a VMotion migration the following compatibility error is displayed:
Unable to migrate from <source server> to <destination server>: The VMotion interface is not configured (or is misconfigured) on the destination host '<destination server>'.
Resolution
Overview
This unable to migrate error occurs when a server has not been properly configured for VMotion.
To VMotion between ESX Servers, a VMkernel port with a unique IP address is required on each of the ESX Server systems.
If this port group has not been configured or has been configured with a duplicate IP address this unable to migrate warning appears.
Workaround
To workaround this error message, you need c heck the configuration of the VMkernel port that is being used for VMotion. To do this:
Note: If one does not exist, create a VMkernel portgroup to be used for VMotion. For more information, see the VMkernel Networking Configuration section of the ESX Server 3 Configuration Guide.

-
Log in to the VirtualCenter Server from the Virtual Infrastructure Client as an administrator.
-
Click on the ESX Server from the inventory.
-
Click the Configuration tab.
-
Click the Networking link.
-
Look for the switch that has a VMkernel port configured.
-
Click the Properties link.
-
Select the portgroup noted in Step 5. Ensure that it has an appropriate IP address assigned and that VMotion is enabled on the portgroup.
