Troubleshooting migration compatibility warning: Reverting to snapshot would generate error (warnings) on the destination host

Symptoms

  • When performing a VMotion migration the following compatibility warning is displayed:

Migration from <source server> to <destination server>: Reverting to snapshot would generate error (warnings) on the destination host .

Resolution

Overview

This warning message appears if you try to VMotion a virtual machine that is using snapshots.

VMware provides the ability to change the default locations that virtual machine files are stored in. If any files for the virtual machine, including any snapshot files, are not located on shared storage that is accessible to both hosts the virtual machine may crash when the migration is complete.

VMware recommends committing all snapshots before performing a migration to avoid the risk of virtual machine failure after migration.

Workaround

To avoid this warning, VMware recommends committing all snapshots from the snapshot manager before performing a migration.
