VMware High Availability configuration issues when an iSCSI Service Console is on the same network

Symptoms

If you have an iSCSI Service Console port on the same network as VMware High Availability (HA) you may experience these symptoms:

  • VMware HA fails
  • You cannot configure VMware HA
  • Some hosts seem to configure, but the VMware HA agent has an error
  • The file/etc/FT_HOSTS (or /etc/opt/vmware/aam/FT_HOSTS ) shows several IP addresses per ESX

Resolution

If iSCSI is set up with its own Service Console on the same network as the VMware HA Service Console, VMware HA registers two IP addresses against the same hostname. VMware HA fails when it tries to configure on  the iSCSI Service Console.

iSCSI must be kept on a separate network or on a separate vlan so that VMware HA does not detect it.  The VMware HA Service Console must not be able to ping the iSCSI Service Console.
