Troubleshooting migration compatibility warning: Migration will cause the virtual machine's configuration to be modified, to preserve the feature requirements for its guest OS
Symptoms
-
When performing a VMotion migration the following compatibility warning is displayed:
Migration from <source server> to <destination server>: Migration will cause the virtual machine's configuration to be modified, to preserve the feature requirements for its guest OS
Resolution
Overview
This warning may occur when a virtual machine is being migrated between ESX Servers that:
-
Have slightly different physical hardware.
-
Have different builds of ESX Server.
The warning means that a compatibility mask will be generated and applied to the virtual machine. The compatibility mask is generated to ensure that there is no chance of application compatibility error when the virtual machine is migrated to the destination ESX Server.
Workaround
This message can be safely ignored and disappears after the first time that the virtual machine has been migrated.
Note: If the warning appears after repeated migrations, upgrade the VMware tools of the virtual machine to the version included with the newest build of ESX server that is participating in VMotion of the virtual machine.
