Virtual switch tagging does not function when using Intel VT Quad Port Adapter

Symptoms

If an Intel VT Quad Port network adapter, or any adapter that uses the Intel 82575 gigabit Ethernet controller, is connected to a trunk port on the physical switch, virtual machines on the corresponding virtual switch are unable to communicate over the network.

Resolution

When configuring an ESX Server host for virtual switch tagging using network adapters that utilize the igb driver, such as the Intel Zoar network adapters, you may encounter a loss of connectivity. The loss of connectivity is related to the ESX Server networking subsystem and the igb driver. If you require VLANs in this environment, you can workaround the issue by implementing an access port-based VLAN configuration on your physical switches and configure the ESX Server host for external switch tagging. For more information, see the External Switch Tagging and VLAN Configuration sections of  VMware ESX Server 3 802.1Q VLAN Solutions .

This issue applies to ESX Server 3.5.0 and ESX Server 3.0.2 with the igb driver installed. To determine if you have the igb driver installed on your system, run the following command from the ESX Server service console:

[root@server root]# rpm -qa |grep igb

The following line appears if you have the igb driver installed:

For ESX 3.0.2:
VMware-esx-drivers-net-igb-1.0.0-59563

For ESX 3.5.0:
VMware-esx-drivers-net-igb-1.0.0-64607
