Auto Download of VI Client 2.5 Fails If VI Client 2.0.x is Installed on Windows Server 2003 SP1 (1003620)

Details

If VI Client 2.0.x is installed on Windows Server 2003 SP1, and you connect to VirtualCenter 2.5 or ESX Server 3.5, you are prompted to install VI Client 2.5. However, the client download process fails with a message similar to

Internet Explorer cannot download VMware-viclient.exe from <IP Address>.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

Solution

To fix this problem, use any of the following options:

Upgrade your Windows Server 2003 SP1 to either Windows Server 2003 SP2 or Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2, and initiate the download again.
Download the VI Client directly from VirtualCenter or ESX Server by visiting https://<yourserver> and clicking the Download VMware Infrastructure Client link.
Install the VI Client from the VirtualCenter 2.5 installation media.
