Summary

This patch provides an update to the ESX Server MegaRAID SCSI driver to address an issue where a Dell PowerEdge 6650 machine with Perc4/DC 352D firmware does not boot after installing ESX Server 3.5.0.

Solution

Symptoms

After installing ESX Server 3.5.0 on a Dell PowerEdge 6650 machine, the system does not boot and the following error message is seen:

Mounting root failed: Dropping into basic maintenance shell
 
When log files are extracted and examined, the VMkernel log contains an error message similar to the following:

ScsiScan: 538: Path 'vmhba1:C0:T0:L0': Failed to create legacy diskId: I/O error

Deployment Considerations

Patch bundles ESX350-200802403-BG and ESX350-200802409-BG must be installed prior to installing this patch. The esxupdate utility will check to ensure ESX350-200802403-BG and ESX350-200802409-BG are installed before proceeding with installation of this patch.

Patch Download and Installation
