ESX Server Might Become Unresponsive when LUNs from IBM SVC Storage Array Are Removed
Details
ESX Server hosts might become unresponsive with the following configuration and scenario:
- ESX Server 3.0.2, with multiple HBAs connected to IBM SVC storage array
- ESX Server has multiple paths to each LUN presented from the IBM SVC storage array
When a rescan is initiated after IBM SVC LUNs are removed from the ESX Server 3.0.2 hosts, the following error messages are logged in /var/log/vmkernel :
cpu7:1050)ALERT: SCSI: 1726: SCSIChoosePath - None of the paths to SVC device vmhba1:1:0 are working
cpu7:1050)WARNING: SCSI: 1785: Manual switchover to path vmhba1:1:0 begins.
cpu7:1050)SCSI: 1789: Changing active path to vmhba1:1:0
cpu7:1050)SCSI: 1072: Could not switchover to vmhba1:1:0. Check Unit Ready Command failed AFTER Start Unit: Not ready
cpu7:1050)SCSI: 1789: Changing active path to vmhba1:1:0
cpu7:1050)SCSI: 1072: Could not switchover to vmhba1:1:0. Check Unit Ready Command failed AFTER Start Unit: Not ready
In the example above, vmhba1:1:0 is the LUN that has been removed from the ESX Server host.
Solution
Apply patch ESX-1002424 on all ESX Server 3.0.2 hosts that are connected to the IBM SVC storage array. For details about the patch, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002424.
