Guest stops responding after connecting a USB CD-ROM

Details

  • Virtual machines stop responding
  • The updfstab processes in the service console stop responding

Solution

A bug in the ehci-hcd  USB driver in the ESX Server service console can cause programs that try to access USB CD-ROMs or floppy drives to stop responding.

To work around this problem:
  1. Log in to the service console as root.
  2. Use a text editor to open the file /etc/modules.conf . For example
    nano /etc/modules.conf
  3. Add # to the beginning of the line that contains ehci-hcd .
  4. Save and close the file.
  5. Reboot the ESX Server host.
