Snapshot Operations Submitted Directly to an ESX Server Host During Storage VMotion Corrupt Virtual Machine Data (1003114)

Details

While a virtual machine is undergoing migration with Storage VMotion, VirtualCenter does not allow the creation or deletion of snapshots for this virtual machine. However, if you connect a VI Client session or a VMware Consolidated Backup session directly to the ESX Server host on which the migrating virtual machine resides, the host incorrectly allows snapshot operations to proceed. Performing a snapshot operation on a virtual machine during migration with Storage VMotion causes the virtual machine to power off at the end of migration. The virtual machine disks will be in an inconsistent state, which might result in data loss.

Solution

Take VMware Consolidated Backups through VirtualCenter Server and connect the VI Client to the VirtualCenter Server that manages the ESX Server host. Alternatively, do not attempt to perform snapshot operations or backups when connected directly to an ESX Server host during migrations with Storage VMotion.
