Not Able To Burn CDs or DVDs in Virtual Machines with Linux 2.4 Kernel Supported Guest Operating Systems

Details

CD or DVD burning without ide-scsi is not supported. All attempts to burn using cdrecord dev=ATAPI will fail to burn data to a CD or DVD.

Solution

For burning CDs or DVDs from Red Hat EL3 virtual machines (or any guest operating system VMware supports that features a Linux 2.4 kernel):
  1. Boot the kernel with the hda=ide-scsi kernel option.
  2. Run cdrecord -scanbus .

The CD-ROM or DVD-ROM should be listed now and the media should burn successfully.
