Aborting an ESX Server 3i Bootup after an Upgrade Invalidates USB Key for Further Upgrades (1003085)

Details

If you abort an ESX Server 3i bootup by booting into the previous boot image (by pressing Shift+R), the firmware that is on the originally active bank cannot be upgraded.

Solution

Upgrade to a newer firmware version than the previously active version. For example, if the active bank has firmware version 2 and you reboot, press Shift+R, and boot into the other bank containing firmware version 1, you must then upgrade to firmware version 3 or higher.
