When You Install Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition on a System Where Microsoft SQL Native Client Driver Is Present, the Installation Might Fail with Error
Details
The VMware vCenter Server (formerly VirtualCenter Server) installation package includes a free bundled version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express for smaller-scale applications. You can use this bundled database with the components that require a database. These components include vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager. When you install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express on a system that has the Microsoft SQL Native Client Driver installed, the installation might fail with the following error message:
An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'.

This issue is documented in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910229 .
Solution
There are two workarounds for this problem.
Workaround 1
Use this workaround if you want to install vCenter Server and VMware Update Manager on the same machine, and you want both of the components to use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express.
-
Uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Native Client.
-
Install vCenter Server and VMware Update Manager.
Workaround 2
Use this workaround if you want to use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express for one of the components vCenter Server or Update Manager, but not both) and you want to use another supported Oracle or Microsoft SQL database for the other component.
- Install Update Manager and vCenter Server on different machines.
