Modified VMware Converter Cold Clone CD fails to boot

Details

  • Customizing the VMware Converter Cold Clone CD and using the PETool to inject the drivers makes the resulting disc unbootable.
  • The boot process fails early in the Windows PE startup process.
  • The following error is seen while booting the disc:

File txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (18) at line 1896 in D:\Srvrtm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c

Solution

When preparing the ISO image with PETool, ensure to specify the driver folder in uppercase characters. For example, c:\temp\DRIVER.

The PETool is case sensitve and will not find the drivers if the directory it not specified exactly as what is in the CD/DVD-ROM device. For more information on adding drivers to the VMware Converter Cold Clone CD, see Adding additional drivers to the VMware Converter Cold Clone ISO (1012947).
