Virtual machine in a DRS cluster fails during VCB backup

Solution

VMware Consolidated Backup and DRS/vMotion can coexist without any issues. However, for this to work you must point your VCB proxy to the VirtualCenter host that manages all the ESX hosts involved, rather than an individual ESX host.

The Disk Lease that VMware Consolidated Backup holds onto does not move with the virtual machine if the virtual machine is vMotioned off during backup. If the original ESX host goes down during backup, the backup is going to fail.

For example:
  • Virtual machine running on ESX host A
  • Backup starts. Disk Lease is handed out from host A
  • Virtual machine is moved to ESX host B
  • If ESX host A goes down, the virtual machine is unaffected, but backup fails
  • If ESX host B goes down, the virtual machine is down, but backup is unaffected
To resolve this issue, you must first free the affected virtual machine.

To free the virtual machine:
  1. Restart the management agents on the host. For more information, see Restarting the Management agents on an ESX server (1003490).
  2. If step 1 does not free the virtual machine, try to restart the virtual machine. For more information, see Powering off a virtual machine (1004340).
  3. If there are locked files, see Virtual machine does not power on because of missing or locked files (10051).
  4. Reconfigure VCB to point to the VirtualCenter Server instead of any specific ESX host. See the Virtual Machine Backup Guide to reconfigure the config.js file.
