pcnet32 loads Instead of vmxnet on ESX 3.0.x (1001685)
Details
- When restarting virtual machines after installing VMware Tools, pcnet32/vlance drivers are loaded instead of vmxnet drivers
- Virtual machines are running Linux kernel 2.4.x- or 2.6.x-based guest operating system
Solution
This issue is resolved in ESX 3.0.2 or higher for Linux kernel 2.6.x-based operating systems.
However, this issue is not resolved in ESX 3.0.2 for Linux kernel 2.4.x-based guests operating systems.
To workaround this issue in Linux kernel 2.4.x-based guests operating systems, you must replace the entry alias eth0 pcnet32 with alias eth0 vmxnet in the /etc/modprobe.conf file of the guest operating system.
This issue is resolved in the patch release for ESX 3.0.1. For more information, see ESX Server 3.0.1, Patch ESX-6075798: pcnet32 Loads Instead of vmxnet (6075798).
