ESX Server 2.5.5: Error Message Appears During Tools Installation (1001642)

Details

At the end of the tools installation on some guest operating systems, the following warning message might appear:

Failed to re-acquire the lock on the CD-ROM. The guest operating system may become confused about the state of the drive.

The CD-ROM continues to work properly on most guest operating systems. RHEL3 might not recognize the CD contents. Currently the system ejects the CD at the end of the tools installation without checking the locks held by the guest operating system. After this occurs, the guest operating system might not recognize the state of the drive.

Solution

If the guest operating system doesn't recognize the CD-ROM state, either by showing old CD-ROM contents or giving I/O errors, you can resolve the issue by rebooting the guest operating system after the tools installation.
