Taking a Snapshot of a Virtual Machine with Independent, Non-Peristent Disks Fails

Details

Taking a snapshot of a virtual machine that is powered on and has virtual disks configured as independent, non-persistent disks fails with the error:
Failed to resume virtual disk scsi0:0:The disk has been modified since you took a snapshot or suspended the virtual machine. Error encountered while restarting virtual machine after taking snapshot. The virtual machine will be powered off.

Solution

This is a known issue with ESX Server 3.0.2.  There is currently no workaround. To prevent a virtual machine with a virtual disk in independent, non-persistent mode from being powered off, do not take snapshots of the virtual machine when it is in this configuration.
