ESX Server 2.5.5: Unable to Perform Scripted Installation Using Virtual Media (1000764)

Details

The boot floppy used for performing scripted installation does not have USB device drivers. Due to space limitations in the scripted installation boot floppy, there is no space to accommodate USB drivers. Because the virtual media is detected as a USB device by the ESX Server system, you might encounter the following error message when attempting a scripted installation using the virtual CD-ROM:

failed to read /modules/modules-info
install exited abnormally
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
disabling swap...
unmounting filesystems
/proc done
/dev/pts done
you may safely reboot your system

Solution

To work around this issue, use the physical CD-ROM or floppy drive on the system for scripted installation.
