Converting a physical blade server fails

Details

  • Conversion of a blade server fails
  • A media tray is attached to the blade server
  • You may receive the following errors:

    • Operating system could not be found
    • Unable to determine guest operating system
    • Unable to read OS info from system disk: sysimage.fault.PlatformError
    • VmiQuerySourceInfoTask::task{0}: Image processing task has failed with MethodFault::Exception: sysimage.fault.UnableToDetermineGuestOs
    • Failed to get info for \\.\PhysicalDrive0: error Reading disk \\.\PhysicalDrive0's geometry: The device is not ready (21)
    • Fatal error occurred.  The most common reason for this is loss of network connection.  The wizard will now be closed.

Solution

Many blade systems use a specialized USB pass-through device to emulate the floppy and CD-ROM when the media tray is connected. The presence of these devices can confuse the operating system into incorrectly presenting the devices as a hard disk type to Converter which attempts to find the system volume on these devices. This causes a guest operating system detection failure. This issue can also happen with non-blade servers when similar devices are connected or virtual machines when performing a hot clone.
 
To ensure converting a blade server does not fail:
  1. Disconnect the media tray from the blade server management console. This should disconnect any floppy or CD-ROM drives from the physical server.
  2. If removing the media tray does not solve the problem, disable the USB devices in the operating system (virtual machines) or disconnect the devices from the physical computer. You can re-enable the USB devices or reattach the devices to the physical computer after conversion is complete.
