ESX Server 2.5.5: System with Mixed 4GB and 2GB HBAs Might Fail to Operate If Divided Inconsistently

Details

An ESX Server system can fail to operate under the following conditions:

  1. The server has a mixture of both 2GB and 4GB Fibre Channel HBAs.
  2. The Fibre Channel HBAs are divided differently; for example, 2G FC-HBA is shared between the service console and VMkernel, and 4G FC-HBA is dedicated to VMkernel.

Solution

Ensure that both the 2GB and the 4GB Fibre Channel HBAs are in Shared mode or are dedicated to the VMkernel. In the case of boot-from-SAN installation, make sure both HBAs are in Shared mode.
