Enabling VMotion for HP DL580 G3/G4 or ML570 G3/G4 Servers with Different BIOS Revisions

Details

For servers of the following models and BIOS revisions, the No Execute Memory Protection feature is disabled by default:

HP ProLiant DL580 G3 (P38) Server
BIOS version 2006.09.08 A (21 Sep 06)

HP ProLiant DL580 G4 (P59) Server
BIOS version 2006.08.08 A (5 Sep 06)

HP ProLiant ML570 G3 (P37) Server
BIOS version 2006.09.08 A (21 Sep 06)

HP ProLiant ML570 G4 (P60) Server
BIOS version 2006.08.08 A (5 Sep 06)

Virtual machine migration with VMotion between servers with identical or compatible CPUs and older BIOS revisions may fail.

Solution

To guarantee VMotion success, the settings for the BIOS feature No Execute Memory Protection must be the same in the system ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) on both systems involved in executing a VMotion. For systems that have earlier BIOS revisions than listed, the No Execute Memory Protection feature is always enabled, so the second system must also have this setting enabled. For systems that have the listed BIOS versions, or later, VMotion will work as long as both systems have the same setting (Enabled or Disabled) for the No Execute Memory Protection feature.
