Warning Messages Related to CCISS Driver while Starting HP Insight Manager on ESX Server 3.x
Details
While starting HP Insight Manager on ESX Server 3.x, you see error messages in /var/log/messages that are similar to those seen in the following example:
Jan 15 17:10:52 osdc-tmpcpd01 kernel: HP CISS Driver (v 2.4.64-1VMS)
Jan 15 17:10:52 osdc-tmpcpd01 kernel: cciss: no controllers found, quitting...
Jan 15 17:10:52 osdc-tmpcpd01 insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.21-47.0.1.ELvmnix/kernel/drivers/block/cciss.o: init_module: No such device
Jan 15 17:10:52 osdc-tmpcpd01 insmod: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
Jan 15 17:10:52 osdc-tmpcpd01 insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.21-47.0.1.ELvmnix/kernel/drivers/block/cciss.o: insmod scsi_hostadapter failed

Solution
This is a known problem, which VMware is working to resolve. The log messages do not indicate a real error condition and their presence is not harmful.
These harmless messages appear when the sg module is loaded (usually by HP Insight Manager) on a system that has no storage controllers except those controlled by the cciss driver.
Hardware preconditions:
-
Most storage controller drivers (including most RAID and FC controllers) are seen by Linux as SCSI drivers.
-
One exception is cciss , which operates various HP/Compaq array controllers and is seen by Linux as a block driver.
-
These messages appear only on systems that have at least one cciss controller and no other SCSI controllers.
Software preconditions:
-
This issue can happen on any ESX Server 3.x version.
-
The messages appear when the console OS SCSI generic driver module sg is loaded.
-
Messages appear at most once per system uptime.
-
ESX Server by itself does not normally load sg .
-
HP Insight Manager agents do load sg .
