Creating or changing a user account password using VMware Infrastructure Client fails (1000259)

Details

By default, the ESX 3.x user accounts created using VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client or a third-party management client must have passwords comprising of character types that include:
  • Alphanumeric characters — You can use numbers, uppercase letters, and lowercase letters
  • Special Characters — You can use any of these characters:

    ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + { } | : " < > ? / . , ' ; \ ] [ = - ` )

If you create or modify user passwords comprising of other characters, the management client displays an error message stating that the user name or password has an invalid format.

Solution

To create or modify a user password that has characters other than the valid characters, use the Linux passwd command on the ESX host.

Depending on the password algorithm used by the host, the passwd command might allow certain non-default characters.

Note: For more information on the passwd command, type this command on the service console:

# man passwd
