Changing a Virtual Machine to Use a Different vSwitch Affects No Change Until Virtual Machine Is Restarted
Details
When you change a virtual machine to use a different vSwitch, the change will not take effect until either you power off the virtual machine and restart it or disconnect and reconnect the network adapter. This issue appears in ESX Server 2.5.4 virtual machines managed with VirtualCenter, the management interface, or the vmware-cmd utility.
Solution
This is a known issue. The network settings change doesn't take effect until the virtual machine is restarted.
For a production virtual machine, however, restarting might not be an option. In this case, disconnecting and reconnecting the virtual NIC is a faster way to get the virtual machine back on the network.
