iPod Driver Doesn't Load in Guest
Details
If you use a Windows guest on a Linux host that has a 2.6 Linux kernel, when you plug in an iPod, you might see an error message in the Device Manager of the Windows guest that says the driver failed to load.
This issue is caused by iPod firmware and specific Linux kernels. Later versions of IPod firmware fix this problem, but not all iPod modules have this firmware fix.
Solution
To resolve this issue:
-
Prevent usb-storage from loading automatically. If your distribution has a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file, add the line blacklist usb_storage .
-
Manually insert usb-storage (sudo modprobe usb-storage ) when you want to use normal USB disks, and remove it (sudo rmmod usb-storage ) before attaching your iPod. Make sure usb-storage is unloaded before you attach your iPod.
-
Plug in your iPod and verify that iTunes in the virtual machine detects it.
