Display Name of Virtual NIC Does Not Change after Upgrading VMware Tools
Details
When you create a new virtual machine in ESX Server 3.x, the software creates a virtual NIC named VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter. However, when you upgrade a Windows virtual machine from ESX Server 2.x to ESX 3.x, including an upgrade to the VMware Tools version, the display name of the virtual NIC does not change from VMware PCI Ethernet Adapter to VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter.
Solution
This unexpected behavior preserves compatibility with the virtual machine's configuration settings that were retained in the upgrade from ESX Server 2.x to 3.x. Changing the NIC name would introduce various issues in the guest operating system, including loss of static IP settings, if present. Although the name does not change, the virtual NIC is actually upgraded. You can verify this by looking at the new driver version.
