Preventing the DHCP Server on a Virtual Network from Serving a Physical Network

Details

I have a Windows XP virtual machine that has two network adapters. One is set up for bridged networking. The other is set up for host-only networking or for NAT. My network administrator says I seem to be running a DHCP server on the physical network. How can I fix the problem?

Solution

The Windows XP Network Connection wizard attempts to bridge all the networking adapters that it finds on a computer -- in this case, all the virtual adapters on the virtual machine. If you have set up either host-only networking or NAT networking, the VMware DHCP server is running on your virtual network. When Windows XP bridges the adapter on the host-only or NAT network to the adapter on the bridged network, the DHCP server on the virtual network sees and responds to DHCP requests from other computers on the physical network. To fix the problem, in the Windows XP Network Connections control panel under Network Bridge, right-click any host-only or NAT adapters and select Remove from Bridge for those adapters. In the future, you can avoid the problem at the time you run the Network Connection wizard. When the wizard offers to detect the adapters that are connected to the Internet, click the Advanced button and deselect any host-only or NAT adapters.
