ESX 4.0 does not use power management features on some servers

Details

Some servers with Enhanced Intel SpeedStep or Enhanced AMD PowerNow! power management technologies might not be able to utilize these features when running ESX 4.0.

Solution

Consult your hardware vendor's documentation to determine if your server has these features, and ensure that your server is listed on the hardware Web-based Compatibility Guide at          http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility.

ESX 4.0 supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep and Enhanced AMD PowerNow! power management technologies. In order to use these features, ESX 4.0 requires certain optional ACPI objects to be exported by the BIOS to the operating system. The _OSC and _PDC ACPI objects required by ESX 4.0 are not defined as mandatory by the ACPI specification and some hardware vendors do not have them in their BIOS implementations.

When these objects are not present, ESX 4.0 does not use any power management features. This issue will be addressed in a future release by treating these objects as optional.
