VMware Fusion crashes or presents an Unexpected Signal 10 error on the MacBook Air if the external SuperDrive is not connected.

Details

VMware Fusion crashes or presents an Unexpected Signal 10 error on the MacBook Air if the external SuperDrive is not connected.

Solution

This error occurs in VMware Fusion versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.1.1 if you have the CD/DVD option set to be connected and the external SuperDrive is not connected. This is due to VMware Fusion attempting to map the SuperDrive as the virtual drive within the virtual machine.  An immediate workaround is the following:
  1. The VM in question should be powered off. If not, power it down.
  2. Go to the Virtual Machine menu, and choose Settings.
  3. Edit the settings for the CD/DVD drive, and uncheck the box next to Connected.
However, the problem was fixed in VMware Fusion 1.1.2, so the best solution is to upgrade to the most current version of VMware Fusion.
