Host CPU Spikes at 100 Percent After Deploying VMware ACE Package

Details

After I deployed a VMware ACE package to a system, 100 percent of that system's CPU is consumed by winmgmt.exe or wmiprvse.exe. What is causing this?

Solution

This is a known issue that has been seen on systems on which Norton AntiVirus 2005 is installed. Depending upon the version of Windows the system is running, the problem occurs with one of two Windows Management Instrumentation processes, either winmgmt.exe or wmiprvse.exe.

When you deploy a VMware ACE package to such a system, that system's CPU spikes at 100 percent.

You can work around this issue. After installing Norton AntiVirus 2005, you can uninstall the Norton WMI Update component. Complete the following steps:

  1. With Norton AntiVirus 2005 installed, open the Add/Remove Programs control panel. Choose Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.
  2. You can see three Norton products in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box: Live Update 3.0 (Symantec Corporation), Norton Antivirus 2005 (Symantec Corporation), and Norton WMI Update.
  3. Select Norton WMI Update and click Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions to uninstall the component, then reboot the system.
  5. If the CPU still spikes after removing Norton WMI Update, uninstall Symantec Live Update and reboot the system again.

Note: Norton AntiVirus continues to work after you uninstall either or both update applications. However, to update your virus definition files or the application itself, you need to reinstall them.

This issue has not been seen with Norton AntiVirus 2001 through 2004, Norton AntiVirus 2006 Beta, or Symantec AntiVirus.
