Installing VMware Products on Unsupported Linux Distributions

I was not able to install my VMware product on my Linux host computer. The version of Linux I am running is not on the list of supported host operating systems and kernels. I saw error messages indicating the VMware product installer could not build necessary modules. What options do I have?

Solution

We encourage you to refer to the list of Linux distributions and kernel versions that are supported hosts for your VMware product. See the release notes and system requirements section of the product documentation: http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/ws_pubs.html

If you are running a supported Linux distribution and vmware-config.pl generates an error message saying there are no prebuilt modules that match your running kernel and fails to compile, please file a support request.
 
Note: If you are using Workstation 6.5.x, it does not use vmware-config.pl.  Instead, and error may be seen when running vmware or sudo vmware.
 
With the Kernel version (2.6.22.1-33), you may also try the following, unsupported "any-any" patch from Petr Vandrovec. It is available for download at  http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmware-any-any-update115.tar.gz .

If you are running an unsupported distribution or using an unsupported kernel version and are not able to compile modules or install your VMware product, we encourage you to explore the VMware community support forums . There are regular discussions on the forums about the latest development kernels and workarounds for building VMware product modules.
