Installing VMware Tools on Virtual Machines Fails If Guest OS Is Set to Other
Details
VMware Tools installation fails on virtual machines imported from VirtualCenter when the Guest OS attribute is set to Other.
In addition, when you create a virtual machine template in Lab Manager with the guest operating system set to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, and deploy the virtual machine, certain Lab Manager operations such as snapshot fail in VirtualCenter, since Windows 2000 Professional is not supported on VirtualCenter (on ESX Server 3.5, Update 1, Update 2, and Update 3).
If you import the virtual machine template from VirtualCenter, update the Guest OS attribute to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional in Lab Manager.
To update the Guest OS attribute in Lab Manager:
In Lab Manager, undeploy the virtual machine. (Refer the section Undeploying Virtual Machine Templates in the User's Guide for Lab Manager 3.0)
Move the pointer over the template name and select Properties from the menu. The Virtual Machine Template Properties window appears.
Select Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional from the Guest OS drop-down menu.
Confirm the change and click Update. The Guest OS attribute is updated.
If you are using VirtualCenter to manage the virtual machine created in Lab Manager with the guest operating system set to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, change the Guest OS attribute to Windows 2000 Server in VirtualCenter:
In Lab Manager, undeploy the virtual machine template. (Refer the section Undeploying Virtual Machine Templates in the User's Guide for Lab Manager 3.0)
Move the pointer over the template name and select Properties from the menu. The Virtual Machine Template Properties window appears.
Select Microsoft Windows 2000 Server from the Guest OS drop-down menu.
Deploy the template.
Log in to the VirtualCenter Server using a VI Client.
Right-click the virtual machine and select Edit Settings. The Virtual Machine Properties window appears.
Selects the Options tab.
Select Microsoft Windows 2000 Server from the Guest OS drop-down menu.
Confirm the change and click Update. The Guest OS attribute is updated.
