Cold Migration from ESX Server 2.x Host to ESX Server 3.5.x Host Fails

Details

Cold migration fails if the destination host is a freshly installed ESX Server 3.5.x host and the option Keep virtual machine configuration files and virtual disks in their current location is selected in the Select Datasore page of the Migrate Virtual Machine wizard. An error message similar to the following is displayed:
Unable to access the virtual machine configuration: Unable to access file []/home/vmware

Solution

To fix this problem, create a /home/vmware directory on the freshly installed ESX Server 3.5.x host.
