Changes in licensing for VI3 Standard Edition when upgrading to VI 3.5

With the launch of VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3.5 the High Availability (HA) and Vmware Consolidated Backup (VCB) products are now available in the Standard edition.

To take advantage of these new features:

• download the latest version of the product, and
• update your license(s).

You can download your VMware products at http://www.vmware.com/download/vi.

You can update your licenses using VMware’s license activation portal

1. Log in to the license portal at http://www.vmware.com/cust-fulfill/login
2. For VI3 Standard licenses on active subscription contracts, you should see the following changes after you log into the portal
   1. An equivalent number of VMware Consolidated Backup licenses have been added
   2. An equivalent number of High Availability licenses have been added
3. To use the new VI3 Standard features, you must first delete any license files that contain VI3 Standard licenses.  You may do this by selecting the appropriate license files from the “My License Files” area of the “Manage Licenses” page and clicking the “Delete” button.  (http://www.vmware.com/licensemgmt/license/summary.lic)
4. You can now create new license files that include VI3 Standard, VMware Consolidated Backup, and High Availability licenses by clicking the “New” button to replace the license files that you deleted.
5. You can then download these new license files and install them in the product to enable the new features.
6. IMPORTANT ADVISORY: Any license files you delete in step 3 must be removed from your license server or VI host before replacing them with the new license files generated in step 3.  Failure to do so is a violation of your license agreement.
