Incorrect Device Paths for LUNs Displayed in Storage Summary

Details

The VirtualCenter Storage summary might display incorrect device path or no information for LUNs that are connected to two or more ESX Server hosts. For such a LUN, no information is displayed in the Extent and Extend Device sections of the the Properties dialog. If you click the Manage Paths button, the following error message appears:

InvalidArguement=Value of '0' is not valid for 'index'. Parameter name: index

In addition, when two or more ESX Server hosts access shared LUNs by using different device path numbers for host bus adapters (HBAs), the displayed properties of the shared LUNs for any of the ESX Server hosts might be incorrect. However, this issue does not exist when ESX Server hosts use the same device path number for HBAs to access shared LUNs.

Solution

To resolve this problem:
  1. In VirtualCenter, perform a Storage Adapter rescan.
  2. If the problem persists, restart the VirtualCenter Server service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting the VirtualCenter Server service (1003895).

Note: This display issue only occurs when accessing the storage properties of a host through VirtualCenter but it does not indicate or imply a stability issue on the ESX Server host itself.
