ESX Server 2.5.5: "kernel panic: Fatal Exception" After a Forced Reboot of RHEL4 U4 Virtual Machine

Details

After a forced reboot or forced shutdown of a RHEL4 U4 kernel, you might encounter a kernel panic message if the vmxnet network adapter is assigned to a virtual machine.

Solution

Do not use any option to force a shutdown or a reboot of the guest operating system. Rebooting the system corrects the action after the kernel panic.
