VMware HA Configuration Errors after VirtualCenter Server 2.0.1 Update

When VirtualCenter Server software is updated, corresponding VirtualCenter Agents are automatically updated on all ESX Server hosts in the inventory. For ESX Server hosts that are part of a VMware HA cluster, there is an additional requirement for HA to be unconfigured and reconfigured.  However, this HA reconfiguration task will not complete on one host while other hosts in the cluster are pending an upgrade, creating a cross-dependency that cannot be resolved without manual intervention.
 
This issue has been resolved in VirtualCenter Server 2.0.2.

Solution

To prevent this issue from occurring, disable VMware HA before shutting down VirtualCenter Server for an upgrade.  To disable VMware HA, perform the following procedure:
  1. Log into VirtualCenter Server with the VI Client.
  2. Click an HA cluster in the inventory list.
  3. On the Summary tab, click Edit Settings in the Commands box.
  4. Deselect the Enable VMware HA check box in the Features panel of the Settings dialog box.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Wait for the Unconfiguring HA task to complete on all hosts in the cluster.
  7. Repeat as needed for other HA clusters in the inventory.
  8. Follow the appropriate instructions for the applicable VirtualCenter Server update.
  9. After VirtualCenter Server is updated, ensure the Upgrade VirtualCenter Agent task occurs for each of the ESX Server hosts.
  10. Return to the cluster Settings dialog, as described above.
  11. Select the Enable VMware HA check box.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Verify that the Configuring HA task completes on all hosts in the cluster

Troubleshooting "Not enough licenses available" error message: After selecting the Enable Vmware HA check box, if you see an error message that there are not enough licenses available, re-license the LMTOOLS/License Server, and then select the Enable Vmware HA check box.

Sites that are currently experiencing an HA configuration error after updating VirtualCenter Server may resolve the issue by following these steps:
  1. Log into VirtualCenter Server with the VI Client.
  2. Click an HA cluster in the inventory list.
  3. On the Summary tab, click Edit Settings in the Commands box.
  4. Deselect the Enable VMware HA check box in the Features panel of the Settings dialog.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Wait for the Unconfiguring HA task to complete on all hosts in the cluster.
  7. Return to the cluster Settings as described above.
  8. Select the Enable VMware HA check box.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Verify that the Configuring HA task completes on all hosts in the cluster.
  11. Repeat as needed for other HA clusters in the inventory.
